About Family and Consumer Sciences
Our Mission
To provide excellent teaching, service, and scholarship in the Department of Family and Consumer Sciences to prepare professionals and leaders who improve the quality of individual, family, and community life.
Accreditation
Eastern Kentucky University is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to award associate, baccalaureate, master, and specialist in education degrees. This Department is accredited by the American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences
American Dietetics Association (ADA) In addition, the National Board for Certified Counselors has recognized NFA 709 Nutrition and Aging, as an approved course for the National Certified Gerontological Counselor (NCGC) specialty certification. Special Requirements
Students are required to observe and/or interact with children in a number of couses offered by the Department. Therefore, students enrolled in CDF 235, 236, 246, 299, 327, 343, 344, 346, 351, 443, 450, 499, 541 and 544 must have a criminal record check and child abuse and neglect (CAN) check performed. Students with a criminal or CAN record may be required to drop the course and select another major. Facilities
Burrier Child Development Center
The Burrier Child Development Center is an accredited (NAEYC) early childhood program enrolling three-year-old children in morning and afternoon half-day programs. The Center provides a program that supports development of the whole child and individual capabilities within diverse family backgrounds. It also offers university students supervised experiences in working with young children and their families.
Nutrition and Dietetics Laboratories
These laboratories are equipped to support undergraduate and graduate courses such as experimental foods, quantity food production, community nutrition, and foodservice organization and management.
Apparel Design and Merchandising Studios and Laboratories
Fully equipped facilities include a testing laboratory with environmentally controlled conditions, a textile science laboratory with classroom, a studio with drafting tables and computers, as well as a design studio with clothing construction equipment. Software programs include ModaCAD, PAD Patternmaking and Patternmaker.
Computer Laboratory
This thirty-nine station lab features up-to-date fully networked computers with current software for each program. There is also a smart board with instructor station to facilitate course presentations. When not in use for class instruction, the lab is open for students to work on projects and conduct internet and library searches.
