Child and Family Studies (B.S.)

Rapid changes in society cause stress to individuals from childhood through adulthood. Coping with those stresses has become an important issue for individuals and families. Career opportunities exist for professionals who understand individual growth and development, interactions within families, and interactions of individuals and families with their surroundings.


This major has three options to choose from.


(Option 1) Child Development
•Prepare to teach or direct private early childhood programs
Work with children birth through five.
•Job Opportunities
Head Start, profit or non-profit child care/agencies, and family resource centers.

(Option 2) Interdisciplinary Early Childhood Education (IECE)

•Prepare for Kentucky Teacher Licensure (Birth through Five).

Support development of infants, toddlers, preschool and kindergarten children through lesson planning, learning environments and assessment.
•Other Job Opportunities

Developmental interventionist for children (birth -2 years).
Prepare individual education plans for children who experience developmental delays and support plans to assist families of those children.

You must be admitted to the Teacher Education Program at least one term before you apply for student teaching.

(Option 3) Family Studies

•Prepare to work with individuals and families in social service.
Study lifespan human development, family and interpersonal relations and non-profit management.
•Job Opportunities
Family resource centers, community agencies, and profit or non-profit organizations that provide services for children, youth, adults and families.
