Kentucky Early Childhood Director's Credential

What is the Director's Credential ?
It is a new credential developed in 2002 by a KIDS NOW workgroup comprised of early childhood directors, teachers, trainers, and university educators. This credential recognizes the unique qualifications of leadership in early childhood programs. Seven state colleges and universities are approved to offer the program of study and the proficiency review process leading to the Director's Credential.

Who grants the credential?
It is granted by the Cabinet for Families and Children and the Office of Early Childhood Development. Currently the Director's Credential is only required in Level 4 of the STARS for KIDS NOW quality rating system.

Who can obtain the Director's Credential?
It is available to persons who are currently in the position of Director in an early childhood program or who wish to have this credential as part of their career plan. Students enrolled in bachelor or associate degree programs in early childhood may also pursue the credential as part of their degree program.

What are the two routes for the Director's Credential?
A candidate for the credential may follow the program offered by the approved university to achieve the prescribed 12 credits hours OR an experienced early childhood professional can request a proficiency review to determine if all or any of the courses which cover the competencies need to be taken.

Can the KIDS NOW Early Childhood Development Scholarship be used?
YES! The scholarship can be used to pay for the course of study or the proficiency review process. The scholarship eligibility requirements must be met.

Contact the Professional Development Counselor at your regional Child Care Resource and Referral Agency for the application. The deadlines are April 15, July 15 and November 15.
