Scholarship Information
Application Deadline: February 15th

The number of scholarships awarded and the amount of the award is determined by the Department Scholarship Committee based on the funds available.

All recipients must possess the following characteristics:
  • good character
  • citizenship
  • leadership
  • commitment to service of others
  • ADM Award
    This award is given to an Apparel Design and Merchandising major who is completing the junior year, is a member of the honorary Phi Upsilon Omicron, has shown scholastic achievement and participation in student activities and organizations. Students are nominated and voted on by Apparel Design Faculty.
    Effie B. Creamer Scholarship
    This scholarship was established in 1991 when Dr. Creamer retired from teaching at EKU. A group of former students, friends, and family of Dr. Creamer began the fund in honor of her commitment to the profession of teaching and her dedication to students. The scholarship is presented to an outstanding graduate student in the Community Nutrition Program. The student should be finishing the classroom portion of the graduate program and be ready to begin the supervised experience component.

    This is a cash award to help defray the cost of travel, lodging, and attire necessary to complete the practical experience. Eligible students should submit a scholarship application along with their internship application. Selection of the recipient is to be made by the Foods and Nutrition Faculty at EKU. The award amount is $250.00, given to one student in the spring semester and one in the fall semester.
    Marva Ann Harris Spirit Award

    This award was established in 2006 to provide financial support to outstanding students in the Department of Family and Consumer Sciences. It is named in honor of Marva Ann Harris, a dedicated employee of Eastern Kentucky University for over 30 years, and someone who most exemplifies the service requirements of the award.

    To apply and be considered for the Marva Ann Harris Spirit Award, applicants must:

    • Be enrolled as a full-time or part-time student in good standing at Eastern Kentucky University;
    • Have completed 45 semester hours; at least one semester of this must be completed at Eastern Kentucky University;
    • Have a minimum of 2.5 cumulative GPA; both EKU and transfer GPA may be considered;
    • Show evidence of a persistent commitment to civic engagement (e.g., community service, volunteerism, service to the university, mentorship of colleagues and dedication to EKU, FCS, and their program area of study);
    • Have civic engagement activity simultaneous with coursework;
    • Provide a summary listing of civic engagement with application;
    • Provide documentation of his or her service involvement (e.g., letters of commendation, handwritten notes from people served).

    Nominations by faculty, staff, student colleagues and self-nomination/application will be accepted.

    Future funding for this scholarship will be provided by colleagues, students, alumni, and others who wish to recognize and honor Family and Consumer Sciences department faculty and staff through a donation to the fund. Such occasions can include but are not limited to: congratulatory recognition, thank you recognition, memorials in lieu of flowers and retirement recognition.

    The first award was given in the Spring of 2007.

    Mary King Burrier Scholarship

    When Miss Burrier retired from Eastern in 1963, she had contributed 37 years of untiring and devoted service to the Home Economics Department and training young women in the Home Economics profession. Many of the Alumnae and Home Economics faculty at Eastern expressed a desire to do something special for Miss Burrier at the time of her retirement. Contributions received from Alumnae and faculty were deposited to the Eastern Kentucky State College Foundation and earmarked for Mary King Burrier Scholarship. The first award was presented in the fall semester of 1964. The recipient of Mary K. Burrier Scholarship should have the following qualifications:
  • Must be a Family and Consumer Sciences major, Junior classification, which plans to graduate the following year.

  • Must submit (3) letters of reference which outline the following:
    • Durability (Truthfulness, Honesty, Punctuality)
    • Service (Cooperation, Helpfulness, Responsibility, Willingness)
    • Leadership (Personality, Self-control, Initiative)
    • Loyalty to the Family and Consumer Sciences Department and Eastern.
  • Minimum of 3.0 GPA is required.

  • Must have financial need.

  • This scholarship will be split between the fall and spring semesters of the students senior year.
    Mary King Burrier FRESHMAN Scholarship

    The scholarship award will be applied Freshman year only. Applicants will meet the following requirements:

  • Major in an area of Family and Consumer Sciences (Apparel Design & Merchandising, Child and Family Studies, Family & Consumer Sciences Education, or Nutrition).

  • Complete an application for the Mary King Burrier Freshman Scholarship.

  • Obtain 3 recommendations which relate to this scholarship (Forms are included with application).

  • Prepare an "essay" to accompany the application which addresses the following:
    • The career focus and reasons for choosing . . .
    • Skills which expemplify professionals in the career including communication skills and subject matter knowledge.
    • Leadership capabilities and potential including prior experiences in school academic efforts, organizations, and community activities.
  • Have a minimum grade point average of 3.0. (must provide documentation).

  • Have a minumum ACT score of 21 (must provide documentation).
  • Roberta B. Hill Scholarship

    This scholarship was established for students majoring in the Department of Family and Consumer Sciences in memory of the late Dr. Roberta Hill, a former Dept. Chair.

    First preference is given to a "non-traditional" student. To be considered a non-traditional student, an individual must have been 25 years of age or older when he/she first started or re-entered college. Must have a minimum of 45 semester hours earned at the time of the application. Must have a minimum of 3.0 overall GPA in all college work. Only current GPA will be considered for those re-entering school after a lapse of 5 or more years. Financial need must be shown. College transcript (either official or unofficial) must accompany the application.
